I think simulations are great too. Technology is helpful for setting the scene, but I think it's pretty sad if our students are no longer able to use their imaginations and put themselves in certain hypothetical scenarios (sadly, it seems like that might be the case in the future).

I find it quite hard to conceptualise simulations with the desired learning objectives, though. Coupled with limited time (too much marking) and an unfortunate need to make sure the students are exam-ready, I've not done anything ever since the role-playing exercise I did a few months back!

simulations have good affordances for rich conceptual learning, unfortunately not many people see the value. they want "instant" test/exam results.

1. it depends on your "learning objective" of the game.
learning about facts, figures, and procedures?
learning how to ace an exam?
learning how to think critically?
learning to be/become a sort of person?
learning a certain worldview (epistemic frame, a la Schaeffer) adopted by a particular profession?

2. it also depends on the design of the game. does it fit the desired learning objectives?

many current "games for education" are superficial and are produced by people just out to make a quick buck.

Ah, but as you've no doubt discovered by now, there are opposing opinions and goals at work here! It's difficult to have a department page without a certain level of formality, if it is meant to represent the views/ideas of your department.

I've actually already got a number of students (those who bothered adding me) as Facebook friends, and use a private blog for information dissemination purposes, but was actually trying to see if Facebook works as a channel of information dissemination & academic learning - doesn't seem to be the case, so far!

I suspect they simply don't want to do anything work-like while on Facebook... (well, I know I won't!)
